Since Hellbound.ca is a Canadian-owned and operated metal publication, we do things a little bit different than most. While 2012 was coming to a close we asked all of our contributors to pick their Top Canadian metal albums of the year. We then tabulated up their responses and have created our fourth annual Top 10 Canadian Metal Albums writers poll.
Please check out what our writers feel to be the best Canadian metal albums released in 2012.
In December all Hellbound contributors were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite Canadian metal albums of 2012. Here are the individual lists that were submitted, then tabulated by Adrien Begrand to make our Top 10 Canadian metal albums of 2012. Enjoy!
Like a good blues song Lovelessness connects with the listener. The heart feels what the musicians feel. Pain, sorrow, anger, joy and lovelessness. Bison filter those feelings through vicious heaviness and impactful songwriting. No matter the transition these Vancouverites do it seamlessly and effortlessly. Nothing sounds forced.
While I expected Hammers to be tight, I was pleasantly surprised to discover exactly how spot-on the intricacies of their songs translated live. Hammers of Misfortune, of course, had the perfect balance of both precision and emotion, the songs given a new vitality, positively glowing in the live setting.
To celebrate Canada’s birthday today we has asked all the Hellbound contributors what their favourite Canadian metal songs of all time were and to write a paragraph or two why. Here is what they told us, along with youtube links to all the songs in question so you can enjoy them too.
HAPPY CANADA DAY TO ALL!

Hellbound readers, you know Natalie Zed, right? Natalie was our big grand prize winner way back in January, taking home more than 50 CDs + and shortly after she received her huge box ‘o CDs, Ms. Zed asked us over at Hellbound HQ if we’d be interested in running reviews of her winnings if she did postcard sized reviews of the albums. How could we say no?
She’s reviewed all the original CDs and is now reviewing newer things that have made their way to her. Here is part eight of her ongoing series which we like to call “Postcards With Natalie Zed”.
“I was immediately struck by the rawness of their sound, distorted and fuzzy and positively enormous in scale. The chemistry between all four members is undeniable when experienced live, and the crackling energy that passes between them combines to create a deadly force field you can actually feel hanging in the air.”
Hellbound’s Renee Trotier caught the Toronto performance of Bison B.C., and lived to tell the tale…
