AMATEUR CONCERT PHOTOGRAPHY HOUR: EARTHLESS @ Lee’s Palace, March 14, 2016

Until last night, the last time Earthless played Toronto was all the way back in ’09. They opened for Witch at the Horseshoe, and completely blew ’em off the stage. So yeah, we’d been waiting a while for their next appearance ’round these parts.

    FUCK THE FACTS @ Coalition T.O – January 15th, 2016

Unforgivingly cold winds were at my back as I arrived at Coalition T.O. just in time to catch the last few equally unforgiving moments of Goth Girl’s screaming one-man spectacle.  A cloud of chaos, there wasn’t much chance of escaping the onslaught of noise.  Trembling with pent-up rage and screaming it all into the mic,…

Wheels of Steel: The Explosive Early Years of the NWOBHM by Martin Popoff (Power Chord Press) It’s now over 20 years since Riff Kills Man! hit the shelves, and, amazingly, Martin Popoff’s output appears to have gone into overdrive. He’s written or co-written over 50 books at this point, and banked interviews with every metal…

AMATEUR CONCERT PHOTOGRAPHY HOUR: SLEEP @ The Phoenix, January 22, 2016

Seeing Sleep at The Phoenix wasn’t just another gig–it was a religious experience. Let’s just say there might have been more than one bearded dude bowing down to the almighty riff last night. And when the whole band came in at the beginning of “Dopesmoker,” everybody up front started headbanging in unison, like a buncha…

Events You Don’t Want to Miss, Toronto – January 2016

Starting the new year off right with a plethora of performances here, as the cold winter nights seem to only encourage Torontonians to rock out even harder.  Ranging from the irresistible blackened doom of Old Witch to relentlessly wild thrash of Brutal Wulfsex, and the hot ticket of Sleep with Montreal sweethearts Big Brave, there…

  • GRUESOME GREG’S TOP 10 CONCERTS OF 2015

There were some really high-quality gigs in the Big Smoke this year, with the long-awaited returns of Neurosis, Electric Wizard and AC/DC, Ufomammut’s first-ever appearance, and a couple outstanding lineups curated by High on Fire and Corrosion of Conformity. Turns out I didn’t hafta travel too far to get my heavy-rock fix.

    AMATEUR CONCERT PHOTOGRAPHY HOUR: COC/Brant Bjork/Saviours/Mothership @ Opera House, December 1, 2015

There was not a dud to be found in last night’s lineup, with all four bands complementing each other nicely while not sounding exactly the same. And suffice to say, a PJK-era COC revival was met with much enthusiasm; it’s been a while since I’ve seen so many crowdsurfers at a concert!

AMATEUR CONCERT PHOTOGRAPHY HOUR: YOB/Sons of OTIS @ Mod Club, November 1, 2015

I can’t even remember the last time I celebrated Halloween or Samhain or whatever, but stick two stoner/doom luminaries on stage on a Sunday night in November, and that’ll get me up off my ass faster than you can say “Too much bass, Batman!”
